What Are the Best Tips for Growing Oyster Mushrooms?

Growing Oyster Mushrooms

Oyster mushrooms are a popular wild mushroom, known for their oyster-like flavor. They are members of the genus Pleurotus. Several species are found in nature, and some of them are usually grown by commercial producers and home as well. Growing oyster mushrooms is quite easy and they need little space to produce significant yields. They can be grown indoors and outdoors, and many companies offer supplies and equipment to grow these tasty mushrooms.

The first thing to consider for any mushroom growing company is whether you want to grow them indoors or outdoors. Growing oyster mushrooms is very easy inside with the use of a mushroom kit, many of which are available on the Internet. These kits are very simple to use and mushrooms can be grown indoors from almost any home. The disadvantage is that they produce a limited number of fungi relative to the outside crop, but they also tend to produce more rapidly mushrooms.

Do some research on the Internet by searching for "mushroom kits". Many companies provide kits, and prices and varieties may vary. Some companies may offer more than one variety of oyster mushrooms. Growing oyster mushrooms is very easy with one of these kits that take up very little space and require little care to produce lots of mushrooms. In general, kits do not require more water addition and a cool and dark place to grow. They usually produce mushrooms within a few weeks.

Growing oyster mushrooms is also possible outside. Wood stoppers inoculated with live mushroom mycelium are inserted into holes drilled in fresh hardwood logs. These caps are also available from many retailers and online suppliers as this is the special wax used to plug the holes. To grow oyster mushrooms in this way, drill holes in newspapers large enough to accept the corks, and space between them about 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm) apart from along the entire log. Almost any wood will do, but you should avoid drowning or fruit wood, such as apple or cherry.

Pile the plugs with a hammer and use wax to seal the hole. Oyster mushrooms require wet conditions to colonize the newspaper and grow, so you need to place the log in a shaded and damp place in some wood or other appropriate place in your backyard that becomes very little or no direct sun during the Non-winter months. Depending on the variety of mushrooms you choose, the time to inoculate logs with caps may vary, so consult your vendor's information about when to prepare your logs. After a period of several months, the newspapers will germinate oyster mushrooms.
